How to winterize your motorhome properly?
The days are getting cooler, and you're planning to winterize your motorhome/camper. It's important to do some work to protect your vehicle from the harsh winter weather.
Our following tips will help you prepare your motorhome for winter storage:
- Thoroughly clean the exterior of your motorhome, including the underbody, windows, and awning. This will prevent permanent discoloration from rain streaks and road grime.
- Check your motorhome for damage or rust and treat it if necessary.
- Empty all water, greywater, and wastewater tanks, as well as the boiler if present. Clean them with a tank cleaner/disinfectant if necessary, and ensure all faucets are open so water can drain from the pipes.
- Fill the fuel tank with winter diesel to prevent condensation and rust formation in the tank.
- Add antifreeze to the windshield washer fluid and check the coolant level or have it checked at a trusted gas station/garage.
- Increase tire pressure by half a bar to prevent flat spots and compensate for air loss over time.
- Turn off the gas valve and allow any remaining gas to escape from the lines. Remove gas cylinders and store them in a dry place over the winter.
- Park your motorhome on level ground in a garage or under a suitable cover that allows ventilation.
- Depending on the winter storage, it is recommended to place a dehumidifier in the motorhome/caravan (make sure to regularly empty the collected water in the dehumidifier) to prevent mold growth in the vehicle and the seat upholstery/mattresses.
- Protect your vehicle with a winter protection cover.
These tips will help protect your RV from damage caused by cold temperatures, humidity, and other winter hazards (frost/ice).
